Sa Re Ga Ma!

August 31st, 2009

I guess this is what they call World Music…

This morning, my older son (nearly 8) sang a heavily accented version of “Aaao bachon, tumhe dikhayen jhanki Hindustan ki ” and the sing song ended with a very melodious duet from the two brothers belting “Vande Mataram”!! I hate to say it, but it was truly an ‘awwwwww’ moment- what with it being India’s Independence Day and my two ABCD kids singing such a heavy duty patriotic song.

“Aaao bachon, tumhe dikhayen jhanki Hindustan ki,

Is Mitti se tilak karo,

Ye Dharti hai balidan ki

Vande Matram” (WordPress doesn’t support audio uploads with this version. As soon as possible, I’ll upload the audio of this morning’s singing.)

Suhail, my older son, has just started taking Hindi voice lessons. He started going for the lessons, more because of his buddies, but to my great surprise, he really loves his class. So, now, on any given day, he’ll be playing ‘The Banjo Picker’ on the piano and suddenly the mood changes to a simple raaga being essyed. Sa, sa, re, re, ga, ga, ma, ma!
