My son’s class made these adorable witches and wizards out of green apples, pipe cleaners, cups, and stray bits of material.
- To start, choose an apple for the head; the bigger the better since the carved fruit will shrink to about two thirds its original size. My son’s class used green apples. Peel and core the apple. Now carve a face ,with the tip of a potato peeler to hollow out deep-set eyes and a paring knife to make a slit for a smile or a frown, or wrinkles in the case of Halloween. For a nose, carve a triangle that goes from between the eyes toward the mouth. Now put the carved apple in a dry spot until it shrinks and acquires natural wrinkles!. (You can hasten the wrinkling process by putting the apple into a solution of salt and lemon juice. Drying can take several days. The apple is ready once spongy.)
Now take a pipe cleaner and insert it into the bottom of the apple head. Cut a hole in a plastic cup, and put the pipe cleaner through the cup held upside down (apple head on top). Then wrap fabric around the cup, and make a little hat for your witch or wizard. This can actually be used to make any kind of doll required!
