This represents the climax of the pilgrimage Haj, which is considered the 5th pillar of Islam. All able-bodied Muslims who can financially afford the journey are obliged to perform it once in their lifetime. It is celebrated to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismael as an act of obedience to God. It happens to fall approximately 70 days after the end of the month of Ramadan.
