Puneeta Kalra, our intrepid Hindi movie reviewer, weighs in on the new Hindi movie, Kurbaan, Saif and Kareena…In her words:
My husband’s nephew was visiting from Providence, RI and so I thought I would take the ‘desiland’ deprived soul to a bollywood flick in the heartland of desiness….A Bollywood multiplex in New Jersey with chaat/ bhel and samosas for snack……
So off we went to see Kurbaan (of course the sexy posters of Saif and Kareena were also a huge incentive)….let me put it this way…not bad given that we have been lately bombarded by ‘terrorist protagonist ‘ flicks. Close to New York in many ways with added suspense.
Saif meets Kareena who is a prof in Delhi university, they fall in love (she is wearing amazing clothes so at that point my focus was a bit more on that),she gets an offer at New York to teach and so Saif does the “kurbaani’ and comes along….(they obviously get married in case the traditional here are getting offended) .They move into an Indian neighborhood, where Kareena discovers her neighbors are terrorists, followed by the discovery that her husband is the mastermind! What follows is a lot of suspense which is good and also a lot of loopholes, not so good…..and yes just like any good hindi movie ,this drags in the second hour.
Now for those who haven’t watched it yet but have just seen the posters with ze sexy pose…..that scene is pretty well done (I envy Kareena her body and her man) but the hype around it makes you realize how prudish sometimes the junta can be…….arre yaar saif ki body dekhne me harj hi kya hai…so why the protest?
