On this rainy and grey Boxing day, I curled up in bed with my laptop, and “Queen Margot” 3 amaras Set in 1572, this adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ book “La Reine Margot” takes place in a France torn apart by the bloody war between Catholics and Protestants. Margot (Isabelle Adjani), daughter of Catherine de Medici, the power behind the Catholic throne of her son Charles IX, is forced to marry King Henri of Navarre (Daniel Auteuil) (a catholic – protestant marriage) in order to strive for peace between the warring factions. This union brings no peace to the city of Paris, but brings about a curious pact and loyalty between husband and wife. Adultery, murder, schemes and plots; it is no doubt a very difficult time in France, and Patrice Chereau’s film brings it out vividly.
