Aal is NOT so vell

January 3rd, 2010

One AmaraMom posted a review of Three Idiots (tag line “Aal is vell”) just below this one, based on what she had heard from her friends. Well, this AmaraMom just came back from seeing the movie, with kids, and pretty much agrees with everything she had heard. I was told by a few friends (with small kids, like mine) that it was a MUST-see, family film. I decided to let go of my impatience with Bollywood (for the most part), and dragged a reluctant hubby and 2 rather suspicious kids (only my daughter had heard of the film) to the movie this evening. Firstly, we were turned back by the ticket collector to pay an uptick on my daughter’s ‘child price’ ticket, as she was over 50″ tall. ????? Has anyone heard of such a rule? And of course arguing with the implacable fellow was pretty useless (needless to say we did try for a few heated moments). And now the movie. It was by far less funny than I had been lead to believe. It was way too long. But forget about that. Most important, there was unequivacly inappropriate content for young kids in terms of some of the college hazing scenes and the use of some words. But forget about that, too. My shock lay in the two suicides, both fairly graphic, and a scene where a baby is delivered. If that wasn’t enough, the baby initially appears still born. All much too much for kids who barely know how a baby is born! My husband and I have been scratching our heads now as to how to answer our son’s questions about ‘Why did he jump? Mommy, he jumped from the third floor! It must have hurt. Was he afraid”. Honestly, it’s been a long time since my kids have stumped me with their questions, and several hours later, I remain stumped as to how to answer him. I did try to pick up on the film’s theme and pass on the message of ‘follow your passion’ to the kids. Although it was quite enjoyable in a time-pass sense,  I would not advise children below the ages of 15 to see it, and I do plan to ask my friends first thing tomorrow morning how they found it such an appropriate and delightful film! My 2 pennies.

Am distressed to read your comments. Obviusly the film is not suitable for family viewing.

Do hope your readers will take note and take suitable action

  2. Very sad and shocked to read about its contents. Not what I expected at all! Shame on them for inflicting such things on small kids.
