Pongal Day Two and a recipe from one of our members

surya-pongalThe second day is dedicated to Lord Surya, the Sun God. Boiled milk and jaggery is offered to him, by placing a plank on the ground, drawing a large image of the Sun God on it and scattering Kolam designs around it. This icon of the Sun God is worshipped for blessings as the new month starts.

Recipe for sweet pongal:

take 1 cup rice (sona masuri etc) and 1/8 of moong dal (heap ful on the top of the cup) and
pressure cook it with 21/2 cups water. you want the rice really cooked well. Then take the same measure of jaggery or little more (after you break the jaggery into smaller pieces using
a roti roller) about 1 and 1/4 cups of jaggery. Take a tava put 2  or 21/2 cups water and add
the broken jaggery and stir it to dissolve it. Bring the contents to boil for the raw jaggery smell to
go away 5-6 mins. Add ground caradomom(4 ) to the liquid. When it has boiled for some time,add
the pressure cooked rice slowly mashing it well (or mash the rice first) and add 4 spoons of ghee mix it well
and remove from the stove.
Fry cashews and raisins and you add to the rice as well.
