republic dayIndia transitioned from British Dominion to a Repulic on January 26, 1950; almost 60 years ago! That day, India adoped their own Constitution. To celebrate, annually a grand parade is held in New Delhi, going from the Raisina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President’s Palace), along the Rajpath, past the India Gate and on to the historic Red Fort (”Lal Kila”). Before the parade starts, the Prime Minister lays a floral wreath at the “Amar Jawan Jyoti”, a memorial to the unknown soldier at the India Gate Then he reaches the main dais at Rajpath, hoists the Indian flag, while the national anthem (”Jana Gana Mana”) is played along side a 21-gun salute. Important awards like the Ashok Chakra are given by the President, before the regiments of the Indian Armed Forces begin their march past.
