Moonlit hike with Bats and Friends!

January 31st, 2010

By Suhail, an Amara Kid. (Suhail and Rohan, along with Bindiya’s family, went on a hike to Vasona Park in Los Gatos, California)

Yesterday, I went on a night hike with my best friend. My best friend’s name is Shaunat. His sister, Avanti and my brother, Rohan were also on the hike. We brought torches so we could see in the night, otherwise, we would be as blind as a bat.vasonapark

We had a tour guide who kept stopping and telling us things about animal senses. Once when she was telling us about how bats find their food, every one, including me, saw a bat flying over the water looking for fish. Then we started seeing more and more! At one point, I even shined my flashlight on a bat’s back. Luckily, it didn’t notice.

I was trying to look for deer but I only saw four bats and one shadow of a fox leaping. I knew it had to be a fox rather than a coyote because coyotes don’t leap that high. Rohan got really tired, so Avanti had to pick him up. Soon, it started getting really dark, so we had to use our flashlights. The stars started coming out, so we stopped to look at the stars and a lot of people found constellations like Orion ad the Little Dipper. Shaunat and I began to get tired, so we told his mom. She asked the tour guide when we were going to arrive. The tour guide told us we were almost there, and very soon we started seeing familiar scenes.

Finally, we arrived back after an hour and a half. The hike was super fun!!
