HBOs amazing “Rome”..but why not Ramayana (or Mahabharata for that matter)?

February 3rd, 2010

My husband and I have been addicted to HBO’s series from 2005: Rome. It is very elegantly made, superbly acted, and of course, the intrigue of the last B.C. century – murder, treason, infidelities, anger, love, incest….what’s not to like?! There are 22 episodes total between seasons 1 and 2, and my hubby and I watch at least 3-4 episodes a night. But, I digress. I cannot help wonder, more and more, why someone can’t have the vision to create an elegant, main-stream version of such a series, adapted for the Ramayana or the Mahabharata. Now, the story of all the Caesers, Cleopatra, Marc Anthony et cal is no doubt fascinating, but nowhere on the same scale as the tapestry that is the two Indian epics. Not even close. Imagine watching a fabulously woven rendtion of Duryodhana and Bhim, Kunti and Parvati, Sakuni and the Kauravs, the battle of Kurukshetra, and the incredibly timeless and beautiful conversation between Arjun and his charioteer Krishna?? My hair stands on end! Surely in this world of crossed cultures and advanced film making, someone will come up with this? Soon?
