Ram Navami 2010
Tomorrow, March 24TH is Ram Navami- Lord Ram’s birthday. I was aware of the Navratris going on, but had completely forgotten about Ram Navami- until a colleague at work described Ram Navami Celebrations at the BAPS SwamiNarayan temple in Milpitas. That,of course, brought back fond memories of Ram Navami celebrations at my grand ma’s home- of her fasting, prayers, kheer and stories about Ram’s greatness. The Ramayana is a mesmerizing story- which I could listen to endlessly- there are as many variations as there are narrators!
Celebrate Ram Navami:
Ravana was the demon king of Lanka- many, many years ago. He had begun to terrorize every body, and it became imperative that he be destroyed. Since he had a boon which declared him invincible from Gods or Demons, Brahma decided that he would be killed by a mortal man. He requested Lord Vishnu to be born as a man and kill Ravana- the evil demon king. And thus was born Prince Ram, to King Dashrath and Queen Kaushalya of Ayodhaya. Ram therefore is one of the ten avataars of Lord Vishnu, one of the most popular avataar, the other being Krishna. That is why, Rama Navami is a very special day and is celebrated by many, many Hindus.
Sabudaana Kheer
My grand ma would always make kheer with sabudaana or sago for Ram Navami. I might just do it too!
